What is Red Thread Disease?
Red thread disease is caused by Laetisaria fuciformis, a type of fungus that thrives on grass that has been weakened from lack of nutrients. The disease's symptoms are most often identified by the threads from which it gets its name. When it attacks a lawn, red thread disease weaves pinkish or reddish fibers around its stem and leaves. As the disease becomes more severe, the fibers grow, forming circular clumps that range from 4 inches in diameter to 8 inches.
Homeowners sometimes confuse red thread disease with other grass infections that can leave a pinkish or reddish mark on their lawns, such as pink patch disease and certain forms of snow mold. These diseases, however, do not leave fibers on the grass, so it is relatively easy to distinguish these diseases if you take a close look at infected areas. It is critical for you to tell these infections apart, as red thread disease requires different treatment methods than other fungi do.
How is Red Thread Disease Treated?
There are two main ways to treat red thread disease. This may depend on how severe the infection has become. For relatively minor infections, you may only need to fertilize and aerate your soil more effectively.
Red thread disease is most likely to attack grass that does not have enough nitrogen. Without sufficient nitrogen, grass is not strong enough to defend against the fungus. This means that if you add nitrogen to the soil regularly during the spring and early summer, you can reduce or eliminate the red thread threat. Lush Lawn suggests that you have your soil aerated. Getting rid of thatch and dense clumps of dirt can help remove red thread spores.
